It might be the very start of the summer break, but university classes will be beginning again before you know it. For many students this will mean moving into new housing, that you are responsible for. This can be a daunting or overwhelming prospect for many students, more so than the lectures and exams themselves. So what are the important considerations for preparing for student accommodation in September?
What are the important considerations for preparing for student accommodation in September?
There are a number of considerations to take into account when it comes to preparing for student accommodation in September. These include:
- the inventory
- paying your rent
- legalities
- bills
Inventory
Ensure that your Landlord provides an inventory. This will contain a list of everything that is available in your property, including the appliances and the furniture. It will also outline the physical condition and properties of these items, completed by the tenants and the Landlord, so that any existing damage will not be blamed on you.
Paying your rent
Make sure that when you move in you know when your rent will be expected. Some student landlords will accept payment three or four times a year once your student finance is paid, while others will want the rent paid monthly. Make sure you set up a direct debit after consulting with your Landlord, so that you never miss a payment.
Legalities
When moving into your new home make sure your Landlord provides you with all of the necessary legal paperwork. You should be given a copy of the property’s gas safety certificate for example, as well as your contract.
Bills
If your bills are included in the price of your rent, make sure you know all the details of the tariffs for the property, especially for the WiFi. If the bills are not included, make sure you take accurate meter readings when moving in, and register with an energy supplier immediately. Otherwise you could end up paying the previous tenants bills.
