But as a student, what kind of goals should you consider setting? And what should you consider when setting achievable targets this New Year?

Whether you’re a first year student, or you’re heading into your final year of university, self improvement is never something to shy away from. And at this time of year, embracing the change, and making positive plans for the future can be a great idea. But these plans or goals need to be achievable. So what should you do? Well, you could consider:
- Breaking one goal into many steps- if your goal for the year is a big target, that can’t be achieved easily all in one go, why not break this target up into smaller chunks. For example, if you really want to take a trip abroad this year, but you don’t have the cash, you could make a plan to save a certain amount of money every month by cutting down on your monthly spending. Or by picking up more hours at a part time job. Alternatively, you could plan to secure a good job this year, and you’d need to consider all the steps involved to get there, including work experience, securing good references, job interview practice, and job application practice too.
- Make sure your goals are measurable- if you don’t know what success looks like for each of your goals, you might not be able to successfully evaluate your progress. Make sure you set targets that are measurable, and remember to celebrate all the successes of each step along the way.
- Make plans for potential barriers- every goal you set may come with it’s own set of barriers or obstacles. Whether these are financial, practical or social, you will need to incorporate strategies to overcome these barriers, if and when they arise.
