With the summer term ending soon, you might be thinking about looking for a summer job, or a part time position to keep through your studies. Either way, a good CV is necessary for securing any employment or even voluntary position. So what should you consider when writing an effective student CV? And how can you be sure to get the job?
What are the important considerations for writing an effective student CV?
Writing a good CV is essential in the highly competitive job market. So whether you’re looking for a temporary summer job, or a more long term position, there are some important factors you should consider to create an effective CV as a student. These include:
- Character points can trump experience for a student CV- for most CV’s, the experience section will be the most heavily detailed and completed. However, when a prospective employee is looking for student hires, or knows that they are looking at the CV of a young adult, it’s obvious to them that the experience may be a little thin. Instead, you should be sure to highlight your positive character traits, and match these to the ones desired in the job description.
- Keep it short- a CV should be only one page in length so keep it short and get to the point. You can also make it easier to read with bullet points and subheading that clearly divide the content.
- Stick to the structure- of course you should do all of the above while sticking to the standard CV layout format and sections that will be expected of any CV including the personal and contact details, qualifications and work experience or skills.
- Send it in the right format- if you’re applying for a job online be sure to send your CV produced in the right format. This is often a PDF format and it can make all the difference to your applications.
