Guide to viewing your student accommodation

Once you’ve decided who you’re going to live with, the next thing to do is decide on where to live! It has been proven that at least 1 in 8 students will choose the first house or flat they come across, so it’s always best to take your time, make the right decision and don’t get caught up in the housing hype.

Before you take one step into any of the places you’re interested in, here are a few tips on how to be fully prepared:

  • Download or print off a house viewing checklist and take it with you when you inspect your house
  • Remember to always take a camera with you to take any pictures you need
  • Prepare some questions to ask to your new potential landlord

One of the main things you also need to think about is if you want to find a property through a letting agency you know or directly through a landlord. With a letting agency, there is more security as they act as the middle man between you and your landlord, but it’s always best to see what you’re comfortable with first. Don’t forget to ask questions.

You also need to ensure that you look out for when you’re viewing your property:

  • Damp – Although improvements are being made, some houses and flats still suffer from damp and mould problems.
  • Pests – Infestations can be another problem in student housing as some are poorly maintained. Don’t be afraid to check the kitchen cupboards and cabinets!
  • Location – Where you live is one of the most important things to take into consideration, don’t pick somewhere to far away as it can become harder to travel.
  • Safety – Security is something every student needs to be aware of as crime rates regarding student housing has risen. Do you research on the area beforehand.
