This week it has been announced the The University of Central Lancashire has landed the number one spot in The Times ranking of the cheapest places to be a student for its cost of living index. This is great news for current and perspective students, especially in light of the current cost of living crisis.

Preston has scored significantly well for a number of factors, including rent, where the average weekly rent for students is around £85. When this is compared to London, where students are paying more than £150 per week, this saving is quite significant.

In addition to rent, Preston has also scored well on the cost of takeaway options, the average cost of a student pint (being £2.50), and UCLan also offers free membership at the Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre to bring gym costs down.

Speaking on the matter, Heather Ellis, UCLan’s Director of Marketing said:

“With students understandably concerned about the rising cost of living, it’s fantastic to see that Preston is the most affordable place in the country to be a student. In these financially difficult times, it’s natural to wonder whether coming to university is a good idea. This Times league table is a reminder that the cost of coming to university can differ considerably depending on where you want to go. University remains an investment that could greatly benefit you in the long term, with graduates earning 30 per cent more than non-graduates, so being able to afford a degree is more important than ever.”
