Taking care of yourself is essential if you want to not only succeed at your studies, but also to enjoy the experience too. With so many demands on your time, from deadlines to socialising, and part time jobs, it can be a challenge to balance everything at once, and self care may be something you neglect. But how can you counter this? And what are the important aspects of self care for students?
Self care for students
There are a range of different things you can consider to make sure you stay emotionally and mentally healthy through self care. These include:
- Set a routine- A consistent daily routine has been proven to provide structure and reduce stress. With a schedule that likely changes day by day, this can be one of the hardest things to get right as a student. But if you can set regular times for studying, meals, exercise, and sleep, you should feel the benefit. Aim for at least 7 hours of sleep each night, as rest is crucial for concentration and emotional well being.
- Exercise and physical health- Regular exercise, even light activities like walking or yoga, are able to boost energy levels and help to manage stress. This can be combined with eating a balanced diet, with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, to help you feel more energised and focused at university.
- Mindfulness and meditation- Mindfulness techniques such as meditation or deep breathing can help you stay present and manage anxiety. This can be very helpful when exams are on the horizon or deadlines are approaching. Apps like Headspace and Calm are popular for guided mindfulness exercises. Taking time to relax in this way, or by engaging in hobbies that bring you joy, can also be refreshing and help you to feel more centred.
