Snow and ice are causing disruption across the UK, with the cold and wintry spell set to continue. Here are some of the things you can do to stay safe:
- Dress smart for winter. Wet clothes can make you lose heat faster, so keep dry in the cold. Layer up and wear a waterproof coat or jacket as your top layer.
- Stick to gritted walkways. Sometimes the temperature can drop suddenly and make the ground slippery. If you see this happening, then try and avoid that area if possible.
- Keep your heaters clear. Make sure you don’t block your heater with anything, including wet clothes, gloves and hats. This reduces fire risk and keeps your heater working efficiently.
- Gentle exercise is a good way to boost circulation and keep warm. If working from an office, or at home; take a break every hour and walk around.
- Eat Well – eat little and often and try to have at least one hot meal a day. Eating increases your body temperature through digestion.
- Stop the Spread of germs– When meeting people indoors; leave windows ajar to let fresh air circulate. If you do need to sneeze or cough – Catch it, Bin it, Kill it. Wash your hands regularly. Reduce the chances of being infected by respiratory illnesses to keep family and friends safe.
- Keep Rooms Warm – Rooms that are used regularly should be kept to at least 18°C.
- Drive Safely– Only travel if absolutely necessary during periods of severe cold weather, with snow and ice; If your journey is essential, check the travel advice from the Met Office and the winter driving advice from the RAC or the AA.
