Living with friends is always enjoyable and fun and to avoid any future conflicts with your flatmates, we have listed some of the top tips on how to live well in shared accommodation!

Paying for Bills

If the bills are not included within your rent, then you are responsible for paying them. When you move in, make sure you take the readings from your gas and electricity meters to provide your landlord, if you don’t do this, you could be paying for the previous tenants! It’s also best to check with your flatmates beforehand if you are all pitching in for food or paying separately, best to get this out of the way to avoid any arguments.

Broadband/TV Licence

Usually during the start of the term, broadband providers tend to hang around the campus offering deals to students. Before you make any final decisions, check with your landlord beforehand in case you sign up to something and you’re not allowed or it hasn’t been written in the tenancy agreement. Also, if you have a TV, make sure you pay your licence to avoid paying a fine.

Everyday Living

If you are living with people from other nationalities, ethnicity and cultural backgrounds, then it’s best to make a good first impression and avoid saying anything that could come across as offensive. It’s always good to buy cookbooks so you can try out new recipes, but remember to always wash the dishes when you are finished! No one likes a dirty kitchen.

Repairs

If any repairs need doing on the property, then make sure you let your landlord know straight away as they are the ones responsible for it. It’s also best to check within the tenancy agreement the rules you need to carry out before repairs can take place.
