After the completion of the £60m university square development, the University of Central Lancashire are set to make further major changes. This will involve improving and redeveloping the area around the University’s art centre and library and students union buildings.
Preston City Council’s planning committee has recently green lit this redevelopment project which aims to overhaul the current public spaces and redesign these with accessibility at the centre of the development. As part of this a war memorial will also be relocated.
The area for redevelopment is between Fylde Road and Adelphi Street, where the current paved area at the back of the students union will be transformed. Currently, this is an outdoor social space which is only accessible via steps, due to being at a lower level. The redesign will level out this space and create a “central university square”, to be used for events like open days and screenings.
The granite square development will be connected to other parts of the campus with a central spine pathway that has a similar design to the recently completed square project. This will lead towards the Victoria building from the arts court gardens at the rear of the new student centre.
As part of this project, the arts court gardens will also be revitalised with new furniture and a new landscape pathway.
The war memorial will be positioned in the central square, although this will be subject to further planing permission.
